How to Adopt a Horse from ReRun

Seven Steps to Adopting a Thoroughbred from ReRun
Step One: Submit an Application
Experienced previous horse owners may submit an application by email, snail mail or fax. We require our applicants to provide us with information concerning experience, facilities, and intended use of the horse. Veterinarian, farrier, and personal references are also required. Prior to visiting any of our facilities, all applications must be approved.
To submit an application, download and complete our Adoption Application. There is a $20 application fee that can be paid online using the button on the right, or you can mail your application fee to ReRun at 236A Waters Rd, East Greenbush, NY 12061.
Step Two: Receive Approval
Applicants will notified of the status of their application by phone or email. FYI: Processing time often depends on accessibility of references, so applicants should notify references that they will be contacted.
Step Three: Choose A Horse
Photos of our horses that are available for adoption are on our "Adopt a Thoroughbred" page and there is a link to read more about them. We provide multiple photographs of our horses, riding and lunging video(s), and detailed descriptions. Approved adopters can schedule an appointment to view our horses, and a horse can be chosen based on the information provided online.
Step Four: Pay the Adoption Fee
Adoption fees range from "fee waived" to up to $2,500 and the average adoption fee is around $700. Fees are based upon the age and physical limitations, if any, of the horse. In cases when we have horses wait-listed at the track, we may sometimes lower or waive adoption fees. Adoption fees can be paid using the link on the right.
Step Five: Sign the Adoption Agreement
Download and complete our Adoption Agreement. ReRun's Adoption Agreement is for one year. Should the horse prove to be unsuitable for the purpose adopted, the horse can be returned to ReRun. The adoption fee is non-refundable, although the previously paid adoption fee can be applied toward the adoption of another horse.
After one year the horse may be sold, but the adopter must contact ReRun first and give us the first right of refusal. ReRun's mission is to insure the welfare of all our horses, even after they leave our care, so if the horse is sold to someone other than ReRun, we must be notified and given the name, address, and phone number of the new owner. IMPORTANT: The new owner can not intend to race or breed one of our horses, and ReRun's horses may NEVER be sold via livestock or public auction, or with the intent of being used for human consumption, or for export outside of the United States.
Step Six: Transport to a New Home
Once the adoption process is complete, we ask that all attempts are made to collect the horse within a reasonable time frame of 14 days. Transportation companies can be found using the link on the right.
Step Seven: Keep In Touch!
As the owner of a newly adopted ReRun horse, you will be required to fill out and send us a completed Adopted Horse Update form every year. Feel free to also send stories and pictures of your horse in its new home and tell us how well your OTTB is doing!
